While we were on vacation for a week, the freezer seems to have thawed and stopped working.

It was making a loud deep whining sound for several weeks but seemed to be working OK. There was quite a bit of frost built up on the back panel.

Also the coils had frozen solid a few months ago, at which time I pulled the back panel below the ice maker and carefully de iced it with a blow dryer. Some one told me the defrost timer switch was probably bad. It seemed to be headed in that same direction but now the back panel is dry and the freezer stopped working. Fridge is quiet. I unplugged it and plugged it in again. It seems to be trying to work.

The first ice over was probably due to my wifes habit of taking the ice tray out to fill a cooler then not putting it in all the way causing the door to stay open. She also tends to over stuff the freezer with plastic bagged goods.

What parts should I be looking at replacing or testing?

Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath the fridge is running.
Is the compressor motor near that fan running.
Are the coils warm ,cold or hot.

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. stopped up? clear? ice in one spot . frost everywhere.

After all the drama, now the freezer seems to be working fine again. No noise and every thing frozen. Any clue as to what is going on. Defrost timer? over stuffing the shelves perhaps?
