I have a Kenmore Upright Freezer (Mod: 253.9280412). I'm having problems with the temperature staying cold enough to keep food completely frozen. 2 years ago I replaced the Temperature Control. I just tested the defrost thermostat and found that it didn't have continuity by putting it in a glass of ice water and testing with a meter. So I replaced it. Next I checked the Defrost Timer. It didn't seem to be advancing. When I turned it, it started the Defrost Heater and the heater worked fine. When I turned the heater off, the compressor started again. I replace the Defrost Timer. The day after I replaced these parts, I'm still getting the warning light and beep. I also went yesterday to get the parts and left the Defrost Thermostat unplugged just to see if the coils would frost up. When I returned about an hours later, they were frosted. I can turn on and off the compressor using the Temperature Control. Don't know what else to do?? Any suggestions?

Hi.

First check if the evaporator fan is running.
Next I need you to run the freezer for 2 -3 hrs and then open the evaporator cover and check if the coils are covered with frost all the way.
If the evaporator fan is working coils should be covered evenly with frost.
In case if the evaporator is not frosted or frosted partially then most likely it's a sealed system problem. You will need a professional.
If the coils are frosted evenly - most likely it's the cold control again.

The cold control Part number: AP2113446
Part number: AP2113446

Post the results.

Simon,

When I took the cover off the coil was only frosted on the upper left corner. I replaced the temperature control. I'm still getting the alarm and the temperature is still not low enough to completely freeze the food. The condensor still kicks on and off. Don't know what else to do? Now that I have replaced the defrost timer, defrost sensor, and temperature control, what's left? This is adding up to a lot of money. Do I just buy a new one or is it worth spending more money calling in a repair man at this point?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi, Bryan.

You can return the cold control back if you got it from APP.
In my post I told you that if the evaporator is only partially frosted it's a sealed system problem not the cold control and that you need a pro to repair it.
That may be very expensive. Check with your local service company.

Simon.

Did this ever get sorted out? I am facing the same issue. My defrost timer is fine(kicks off the heater, and then goes to cooling mode, tested its resistance and its capacitor). The cold control sensor tests fine too. The cold control sensor is located in the fridge, fridge cools fine. the freezer is cold but doesn't get cold enough. The evaporator coils are frosted evenly towards the bottom and also the top right coil is frosted. There is a freezer cold control knob which is located on the freezer backplate below the evaporator fan. There is no wiring that goes to it and it seems like its just a dummy knob. Yes, the evaporator fan is running. Everything seems running normally, just freezer won't get cold enough. Thinking its a sealing problem in which case I may just get a new unit...unless it could be something else.....
