Kenmore 23 cu. ft. side by side just starting making a buzzing sound. Lasts about 10 to 20 seconds and occurs about every 5 minutes. Unit is still cold, so is this a sign something is getting ready to die and I can pre-empt or should I wait till complete failure in order to avoid replacing parts until the cause is found? Is it something I can fix or need a pro?

Try to pinpoint where the buzzing is coming form. One likely place would be under the fridge at the compressor. Pull the fridge out so you can get behind it and remove the cover on the bottom to see it.
The water inlet valve could also make a buzzing sound. It's also at the back where the water supply comes in.
A control board in the fridge could also make the noise.
A solenoid in the ice dispenser.

woodchuckie, lower left as you are standing behind it. Have installed new water inlet valve when I replaced the ice maker (two for one...). Also am driven to believe it is something with the compressor as the buzzing sounds happens two to three time and then the compressor kicks in. Usually all the time which makes me think it more tied together than chance. Again, is it worth fixing now or waiting till total failure, check it part by part, replace as needed vice hit and miss part changes? I ask because Hit and Miss part changes are a way of life for me, never get the right part the first time, it is always just the next one in line that is getting ready to fail......
