There is no o-ring in the position you describe. There is supposed to be slack between the two parts of the agitator. The upper agitator is only driven in one direction. If it was meant to just go back and forth, there would be no need for two separate agitator sections nor the ratcheting mechanism that the cam and dogs provide. The upper section is only driven clockwise to force the clothing down to the lower agitator where they are forced outwards, up the sides of the basket and then back down again by the upper agitator. That's why it's called an auger. An auger driven equally back and forth does nothing.

Sound like anger in your message. No anger intended. I know that the washer is agitating now as it did when it was new. The auger does go in one direction only - clockwise however the dogs stop it from free flowing in a circle. That is the purpose of the dogs. I removed the cap and watched the washer before I repositioned the o-ring. it was free flowing with no stop, the dogs were not being used at all when the agitator was washing, I simply placed my finger on the outside of the auger with minimal pressure and the dogs engaged, then released, then proceeded clockwise, then caught, and proceeded clockwise. I took it apart pulled the o-ring higher and now it works. All I know is now it works and I'm happy.

Sorry to have caused you trouble or problems, not my intention. Just pretty complicated to explain in words. Several years ago all i did was talk to someone and they said I needed dogs and it fixed it, just as it is now. All is good.

Thanks again, sorry to cause any problem.

In your last post, you said "now my washer is agitating back and forth on both sections" and now you say "the auger does go in one direction only". Regardless, if your happy, that is all that matters.

The purpose of the dogs is to drive the auger in one direction only. If it only works with this unspecified o-ring, then you may have installed something wrong. There are two tabs on the lower agitator that must engage two slots on the cam in the upper section when you install the upper section, or alternatively, you can remove the tabs and just rely on the tight fit that the agitator bolt provides.

I am not angry, I'm just trying to explain how it is supposed to work and help you get your washer fixed. The o-ring that you placed on the lower agitator does not belong there unless you have a totally unfamiliar to me agitator in your washer. What is the part number of the kit that you installed?

Tabs broken off, bolt tightened, still slack. Followed instructions to a "T" except there was no mention of the o-ring. My husband installed the previous kit so I was unsure of the correct placement of the o-ring. I repositioned the o-ring and it stopped the slack. It is working. I am happy.

Ok, there is supposed to be "some" slack between the agitator sections. If you have an excessive amount, you may just need a new agitator. The o-ring in that kit is just a replacement seal for the inner cap. It does not belong on the lower agitator. It's liable to get broken and end up in your pump.

You say when you press on the auger, it begins working like it should. The dogs have teeth on them that engage a ring of teeth on the inner circumference of the auger. It could be that these teeth in the auger are worn down in which case, you would need to replace the auger.

Hello Eric,

I have another question for you. Does the bottom agitator have a washer around the hole for the bolt holding the top agitator (hard to explain but would be under the dog unit on the lower agitator) where you drop in and bolt the dog kit?

I bought the replacement washer that goes on the bolt but there isn't one of the lower agitator. Should there be?

Thanks,

The washer goes over the bolt, and the bolt goes through the cam. There's no washer between the cam and lower agitator.

Thanks, that's what i did. Would it make a difference on how it is placed, bevel up or bevel down? I'm so confused about why the dogs are not catching when the lower agitator works.

There is no slack in the lower agitator and it works like it should. I've watched the video and the only difference is that the lower blades(?) on mine are shorter and do not go as high up the middle. My two agitators do not snap as the video does, it will not go down any further. Also I broke the tabs off as stated in the instructions however the video said he doesn't.

Another strange thing, I had also purchased a dog kit for my best friend's washer as she also had one worn, same brand washer, same dog part number. I had not installed it until yesterday (after I watched the video). Her agitator looked exactly like the one in the video and it came apart and went back together just like the video. When I tested it with my hand it worked just as the instructions said. Free going clockwise and dogs catching and stopping counterclockwise. So I left and came home, she didn't wash until the next day. She says hers is going in a free clockwise motion too and dogs doesn't catch. I can't figure this out. This dog kit is the number that was given to me for replacement, but could it be that the dogs need to be one size bigger? I'm at my wits end. I was going to replace my lower agitator but now with my friends doing the same thing, I'm wondering if it may be the dogs. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!
Diane

Bevel side up on the washer. The upper agitator is only supposed to turn clockwise during normal operation. If it doesn't turn at all during normal operation when the lower agitator is going back and forth, the teeth on the inner circumference of the auger (upper agitator) may be stripped as I suggested before. The teeth on the dogs engage with the teeth inside the auger when the cam is driven in the clockwise direction only. Maybe you should have a tech come out and look at it.

Thanks, I forgot to mention to you that I did order the auger as you suggested. Installed it and it does the same as the old one, compared the teeth and my old one is as good as the new one. When manually testing, the teeth will catch but when the washer is washing, dogs never ever engage unless I apply just the smallest amount of pressure to the auger. Same thing on my friends washer. Just thought it may be a fluke with the dogs or maybe need another washer on the bottom to tighten more. In order to get the agitation on the top, all I have to do is place my hand on top and everything engages as it is suppose to. Just hate to get rid of this machine, and can't really afford to pay a technician to come to the house.

Anyway, thanks for all your help.
