Maytag MED5700TQ Electric Dryer lost all power

The dryer ran several loads just perfectly today. At the end of one load, the power stopped and the dryer just won't work. No timer, no light, nothing. Breaker is fine, nothing tripped. Is this a problem with the dryer or more likely with the power outlet? Dryer is only 4 years old.

Here are your parts Parts for MED5700TQ - AppliancePartsPros.comSee the attachment for the tech sheet By light, I am assuming you mean the interior drum light. I would look at the power first as it is tyhe most likely cause and is easier than taking the dryer apart. Try flipping the breaker off/on slowly a couple times. Sometimes you can loose half the line without actually tripping the breaker. Check the voltage at the plug L1 to L2 should be 240 volts L1 to Neutral and L2 to Neutral, both should be 120 volts. If OK Unplug the unit and check the wires at the terminal strip in the machine to make sure none are loose or burned out If OK Check the power at the terminal strip. Do this with the heater off and on. Be careful as 240 volts is lethal !!![COLOR="Red"]

OK so here's the thing...two days after the power was lost, we opened the dryer, and the light was on and the power was back! Never touched the breaker again, never touched the plug or the wires. Set the timer, turned it on, and the dryer worked perfectly? Aside from naming it Lazarus, any other idea what to do here? Is this a sign on something overheating and shutting down on the dryer itself rather than an issue with the power?

I cannot think of any reason it would shut down for 2 days due to a problem in the unit.
In any case you would not be able to find thaecause if it was so all you can do is wait and see. |

Just wanted to update this with more info in case you could still help. The dryer has been running fine for a few weeks now, and just stopped again today. We've noticed that the shutdown constantly happens when the dryer is in the Cool Down part of the cycle. And when it stops, all power shuts off, even the timer stops running. Does this help point toward a cause?

When you say all power, does the in interior drum light also not work?
Can you restart it right way?
Does rotating the timer, get it started again?
It is very haed to troubleshoot because it is intermittent.
If you cannot find a bad/loose connection then my best guess is that it is a timer problem but this is just a guess. |

The interior drum light is currently off, and the timer is not working. Total shut down. Last time it happened, my wife just happened to check it after three days, and everything was back on! As of now for this incident (about 24 hours), everything is still dead.
If it is a timer issue, how do we look into fixing that? Is it worth the cost? Every authorized repair person around here charges $100 just to show up and diagnose. I'd hate to get a new dryer over a possibly simple issue.

Looking at the wiring diagram I enclosed earlier you can see that the drum light is the first part in the circuit.
So I would say that your problem may be with the wiring going to the dryer, the line cord or the door switch.
The timer is not part of the lights circuit so I doubt this is the problem.
Try flipping the breaker off/on slowly a couple times, sometimes you can loose half the line without actually tripping the breaker.
If this does nothing, check the voltage at the plug
L1 to L2 should be 240 volts
L1 to Neutral and L2 to Neutral, both should be 120 volts.
L1 to Neutral runs the light and the motor.
If OK
Unplug the unit and check the wires at the terminal strip in the machine to make sure none are loose or burned out
If OK
Check the power at the terminal strip.

Since I am not the handiest of gents, would it be better to have an electrician or an appliance repair person take a look at this?

Cannot really say if you should tackle it as I am not sure how handy you are.
If you have no experience with electricity it may be best to leave it to a pro.
Also you will need a meter to troubleshoot this problem. |
