My dishwasher makes a horrible loud rattling/clanking noise upon starting or stopping. When starting, the noise lasts apx. 5-10 seconds. The noise doesn't reoccur through the entire cycle until it stops. The noise appears to be coming from something rotating because it slows until it comes to a stop when I stop the dishwasher.
It doesn't matter when I stop it during the cycle, the noise will occur when I stop and then again when I restart.
Everything else seems to be fine. The dishes are clean as always.

Hi. Check two things: -Open the kick panel, look inside where the motor attached to the pump housing. See that metal fan blade? Turn it and if it's loose-this is your culprit. The solution is to replace the motor/pump assembly or weld the fan back on if you know how. -Second place to check is inside the sump.Take two screws holding the cover out and check if there are any foreign objects inside (broken glass, cherry pits, etc.) Here are the breakdown diagrams and Motor / Pump Assembly parts for GE GSM603P-49AW - AppliancePartsPros.comGood luck.Post the results. Simon.

Thanks Simon!
The metal fan looks like it is the problem. It was really loose. I was hoping for an easier, cheaper fix, but it helps a ton knowing what the cause is.
