Greetings, Gurus! My otherwise dependable Maytag has sprung a leak. From the service manual, it appears that there are two different seals that could be causing the problem. Unfortunately, I cannot make out the scanned photos illustrated in that manual. I've attached a photo of my washer, instead. After opening the front panel, I have water coming down the center shaft. I removed the agitator, but apparently I need a special tool to go any further. Through trial and error, I've determined that the machine begins to leak once the water level reaches that black rubber gasket atop that center ... not sure what its called, but I marked it in the photo. I'm thinking I need what the manual calls a "center shaft seal" but I can find no reference to that in any online parts catalog. Am I correct in thinking that I need to replace that pictured black gasket? Thank You! qwe attached the following image(s):

I found this other thread here in the forums where they fixed a leak with something called "goop". I found a reference to a product called Plumbers Goop at another site. Would something like this work in this situation?

Thank You! I realize your post is old, but wanted to post what I have learned for others in the future... That seal you marked appears to be part of the mounting stem. I just purchased a 6-2095720 kit to repair my older A308 model Maytag and see my replacement part is identical to your picture. My original stem has a different type of seal held in place with a snap ring exactly as shown in the A308 maytag parts illustration: https://www.maytag.com/digitalassets/MLPDF/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20A308.pdfI 'think' the OEM stems used a A4298 seal held in with a snap ring, and (newer?) replacement stems have a different seal pressed into the stem as an assembly. Regarding your water leak - the seal you identified could be bad, or the surface of the agitator shaft that it rides on might be corroded/pitted. Replacement of the seal and/or shaft requires stem removal (and the spanner wrench). Once you have it all apart, you will see the shaft's seal surface as well. For my A308, the shaft appears to be only available in the 22002124 kit, which also includes the items that make up the 6-2095720 seal kit.
