My Maytag washer motor is really loud and trips the thermal switch, when hooked to the washer power source (and unhooked from the transmission and drive assembly) but when I move it to an alternate power source with jumper wires from an outlet it sounds perfectly normal. Could this be the timer? I just would like some help before I spend 100.00 dollars for the part. Thanks

I don't understand exactly what is going on here but the timer is not likely the issue.

The transmission may be jamming, or the there may be a problem with the motor, buy changing the power source shouldn't affect anything, so I am not sure exactly what the problem is.

So the motor is completely unhooked from everything except the power cord that goes up to the washer timer, the pump drive and transmission are unhooked and the motor is free from all drive parts. When I switch the timer to any setting it turns on but is very loud and then turns off cause the thermal switch trips. Once the switch resets it will do the same thing again. I unhooked the motor from the power wire on the washer. Then I tested it on a power cord I made, that is completely seperate from the washer, and it runs just like normal. So the only thing I can think of is that the timer may be giving it the signal for low and high operation at the same time. How could I test this?

I also checked the transmission/drive and it all spins freely with no issues.

Does this make it more clear what is going on?

Do you think it could be the timer?

Thanks, that does make it clearer.

I am still not convinced the timer is the issue. If you are going directly from a cord to the motor and not using the motor switch then the motor switch could be the problem rather than the timer. But I think you will have to try it to see if that is the case. If you buy from this site you can return the switch if it does not fix the problem.

So this part is what I'm attaching my cord with alligator clips to. I just found the correct little prong that made the motor turn on. Does this change what you think the problem could?

Okay, I thought you had removed it and were going to the motor directly.

I am still skeptical on the timer, so check the wiring from the timer to the motor switch. If it is okay then maybe the timer is the problem, but your symptoms are unusual for a timer problem.

Are you using the capacitor for the start winding in your jumper setup?

So is there any way to test if the timer is bad and giving a screwy signal?

Yes I'm using the capacitor to jump it.
