While washing, a loud noise occurs...does not happen during spin cycles, only wash and rinse. Louder during regular wash/not as loud during gentle...

Hi. Use the putty knife to open two clips on the top of the front panel (one in each corner), lift the top, remove two screws in the corners and remove the front panel. Try to locate where the noise comes from. Check the pump, motor, transmission. Make sure that nothing is restricting the agitator. Thank you for your response, took it apart as suggested...Question on agitator, should the bottom piece *#17 from link below/large circle at bottom move? top piece of agitator #16 on diagram, moves freely to the left, not right, but the bottom round piece #17 at bottom of washer does not move with top cylinder piece. * 04-Inner-Outer Tub parts for Maytag MAVT236AWW - AppliancePartsPros.com

The bottom piece moves only when the transmission shaft moves.
