My KitchenAid Fridge simply stopped working. There is power to the lightbulbs and the fan in the back.
I have already replaced the run capacitor and the start developer and it still hasn't worked. I've also cleaned the coils in the bottom of the unit as far as I can get to it. What else can I do?

See the attachment for the tech sheet As you can see from the wiring diagram the compressor should run whenever the condenser/compressor runs as they are wired in parallel. Although you did not specifically say, the impression I got was that the compressor is totally dean (no sound/hum etc.) It could be that a winding has blown, below is a link with info on how to check this. Following is the warranty info that comes up when I search this model at the Whirlpool site. Hi Denman,
I pulled the start developer and run capacitor assembly off of the side of the compressor and checked for continuity on the three pins. It checked good.
And I checked for continuity to ground among the pins and there is none. Also, I tried to use the Service specs and the programming modes from the attachment you sent me but the only thing I can get out of it is the sabbath mode and the selection of centigrade or Fahrenheit. I could'nt get past that.Meaning, I'm unable to run any of the service test or get to the programming mode to reprogram the fridge.
I'm not much of a spark chaser so I'm at a stopping point right now. I have ead in the forum also, that, if the compressor checks out good, and also that of the run capacitor, then the next is the control board. How do i confirm that? BTW thanks for pointing me in the right direction on where to start looking.

Is the condenser/compressor fan running?
If it is then the control board is OK as it is sending power to the compressor and trying to start it. |

yes the fan is running. The fan running, is the only thing constant the whole time that I had set out to find out what is wrong with it.

You may have two problems in the unit but the immediate one is the compressor. The dashes may just mean the fridge is too warm.
If the condenser fan runs then the compressor should also run as you can see in the wiring diagram it is wired in parallel with the compressor.
You have checked the compressor windings and they check OK.
You could try replacing the start device.
Sometimes the only way to tell if it is the problem is to replace it.
I would check that the wires going to it are OK.
Note that just because the compressor seems to be OK electrically does not mean that it is OK. It could have mechanical problems or winding to winding shorts. |

I've already replaced the start device and the run capacitor. You maybe right about the compressor being bad even though continuity is okay. But what about not being able to access the programming codes? Which is what I was running into?

I do not think it makes much difference.
Since the compressor is getting power and is not running then you have a sealed system problem.
This will be an expensive repair as you need a pro and often it makes more sense to put those dollars towards a new unit.
You may want to start a new post with all the info/diagnostics you have so far and get a second opinion on this. |
