Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! What's better than having a dozen family members in for the holidays? Well, a dozen family members, a ton of leftovers, and no microwave, of course!

Anyway, this unit stopped heating a few months ago, and I bought a new magnetron, diode, and capacitor from APP. Installed the magnetron only, and the unit worked fine. Then the other day noticed it was running, sounded fine, but was not heating. So I took it out, and replaced the diode and capacitor with the part I bought. Also checked the magnetron with an ohmmeter, and it appears to be okay.

After we put it back together, the unit still did not heat right away. Tried for 1 minute on the express setting, then changed up the power level, but nothing. Then later, on a whim we tried a mug of water for 4 minutes, and it came to a boil. Thinking that maybe the microwave needed to run a while to charge the capacitor or something, we put it back in the cabinet, thinking it was fixed.

We were apparently wrong....still doesn't heat. Any ideas?

Thanks!

To reply to my own post, and bump it to request review from the APP team. I have checked all the connections, checked (to the extent I could with an ohmmeter) all the parts. I have a 5 month old magnetron, new diode, new capacitor. Still no heat

I suspected the switches, but while I have noticed that the light does not dim and the characteristic hum doesn't seem to happen, the magnetron housing and heat fins still get hot. This suggests that the switches are not locking out power to the magnetron. But again, the water in the mug inside the microwave does not get hot.

Could it be a switch? Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi.

Most likely it's the magnetron again - it had lost the vacuum.
Get another one.

Simon.

Thanks, Simon...but I got someone else at APP in response to my question on the parts page to say that "if the magnetron, diode, and capacitor are new, it must be the HV transformer." Could that be right? As I said above, the magnetron is less than 6 months old, bought from Appliance Parts Pros. Do we still think that it's the magnetron...whatever it is, I don't mind, just don't want to change out the wrong part. Thanks a million!

I hope your problem gets immediate attention from someone that gives a $h!t about customer service. Being told to 'get another one' and 'it must be the hv transformer' because you bought everything else, just doesn't cut it.

Hi, dear Tobomeo.

The suggestion to get another magnetron is my professional opinion.

Being a repairman for few years I've seen magnetrons going bad in several months after the replacement.

So, I still think that thew magnetron should be replaced.

Return the old one back under the warranty. Contact our customer service.

Simon.

Simon:

I ordered a new magnetron, it came in one business day (standard shipping!), and installed it. The microwave works now, thanks again.
