The fridge makes a sound while running that sounds like a distant freight train whistle, as best as I can describe it. I finally figured out the evaporator fan seems to be the culprit. But before I replace it, I want to make sure. A month ago the evap fan was running fast/slow in rythmic pulses. Could there be something in the controls that are failing (mainboard, thermistor) or does it sound like the actual evap dc motor?

The GE motherboards are famous at sometimes putting out frequencies that make the evaporator motor and fan make these sort of noises.
Only solution is replacement of the mother board. You might want to call GE with your model # and serial # to see if it is covered under some kind if warranty due to a class action suite.

The board took care of the problem, even fixed the LED on the ice panel selector button. Thanks. :)
