Hello everyone. I have a 25 year old GE fridge in a condo I rent in Florida. I travel back and forth quite a bit. When I would come back I would notice that the ice cube tray and the ice cube holder had melted down and refroze.

This time back the freezer was very warm and I lost my food. I turned the fridge off for a couple days to melt down, there was very little water melt off.

When I plugged the fridge back in the freezer did not get much over 40 degrees. Then 2 days later the freezer went down to almost 10 degrees but then warmed up again.

I purchased a defrost control and defrost thermostat from Parts Pros. I put in the defrost control it was on defrost cycle, turned it a little clockwise and the fridge came on and was blowing real cold air. A couple hours later the freezer was down to 10 degrees and made it down to 0.

After a couple days I went out and bought some more food but the next morning it was warm again. Had to move my food to the fridge at work. The defrost thermostat did not help.

Any ideas? This has me scratching my head!

When you replaced the defrost thermostat and the defrost control was ice blocking the coils? If so replace the defrost heater. If not clean the condenser and see if both of fans are running. If one of the fans is not running replace it. Hope this helps! Refrigerator repair guide

Thanks applianceman. I checked both fans - they are working, the condenser coils are all clean. I had the back panel in the freezer off when it was running. The coils in the back get a real frosty look to them when the freezer is working properly, but they are normally all clean because the freezer is at 40 degrees.

Could I have a defective defrost control? It is just strange that it ran like a champ for almost 3 days after I changed the defrost control. Can a compressor being intermittinley bad?

Thanks,
Jack

You don’t have a defrost problem unless there is enough frost to block airflow. A thin film of frost on the entire evaporator coil means it is refrigerating. This type of problem can be hard to diagnose because it is intermitting. You’re going to have to check it when its not working. Refrigerator repair guide

From your first post
When I plugged the fridge back in the freezer did not get much over 40 degrees. Then 2 days later the freezer went down to almost 10 degrees but then warmed up again.

I am assuming you mean did not get below 40
When this happened did the compressor or compressor fan come on

If no then there is a chance your thermostat is shot, they can go intermittent.

If the fan came on then thermostat is OK so it is either the compressor itself or it's start relay.

Below is a good link

Remove the relay and give it a shake if it rattles it is probably bad.
