I am having what sounds like the exact same problem. My unit shuts off about every four hours and I have to bang on the side to get it to come back on.

Hi.

This time replace the cold control Part number: 2315562
Part number: 2315562

That should take care of the problem.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for Whirlpool ED2KHAXVQ01 REFRIGERATOR | AppliancePartsPros.com

Thanks Simon. I'll get mine ordered asap. Can you help me understand why banging on the side of the unit makes it work when this piece is deffective? Also, is this something that will be simple for a layman to install?

The banging shakes the control and close the contacts. To replace the control you need a 1/4"nut driver and basic skills.
