I have a Gibson freezer that will not get cold. I checked the switch it appears to be working - continuity, and when plugged in it turns the compressor off and on as you turn the dial from off to on. I also jumpered it and no luck.
Back Ground - Freezer was working fine. Door was left open overnight. Freezer worked for several months then got warm. We took all food out defrosted and plugged back in. A few months later it got warm again. Defrosted it and now it will not get cold.
Can I check the capasitor? how do I know if it has auto defrost? could it be this?
What else can I check? What is wrong? Can I put more freon or gas in it? Please help!!!! John

Hi.
If the compressor is running then most likely there is the sealed system problem. You will need a pro to take care of it.
Simon.

Simon. So.... Is it worth repairing? I see that for this freezer a compressor system goes for about $170. Or do I just replace it. If I remember it was around $800

To replace the compressor you will probably pay anywhere $400-500. It's your call.

Simon. Can it be the relay or run capasitor? the parts list do not show a defrost switch.

If the compressor IS RUNNING and freezer is not cold - it's the sealed system.
Is it running?
Simon.

Simon. It makes a noise and gets quiet( shuts off) when you turn the thermostat to off and makes noise (hums) when you turn in to a colder setting. I guess that means that it is running. So what is wrong with the sealed system exactly?

Put your hand on the compressor. If you fill the vibration and hear the motor running that means compressor is running.
To get an answer to your question the pressure gauges should be installed on the low and high sides of the sealed system.
Simon.
