Hey pls help my fridge and freezer stopped getting cold ice cream is slowly melting and ice is watery and in the fridge beverages are not getting close to cold and raw meat is turning.
There is power to the everything and the lights go on upon opening
I have vacuumEd all the vents front and rear and you can hear the normal hum of it. Nothing seems wrong until you see what's inside. I am thinking something is up with the condenser or the coils.. There was a brownish residue on the floor In the rear and on the side of the unit. Thanks for your help in advanced

Also the condenser/compressor fan blades. [COLOR="Blue"]you can hear the normal hum of it.[/COLOR] Is the compressor running.? You can usually hear it but should also be able to feel it vibrating. Is the condenser fan running? [COLOR="Blue"]I am thinking something is up with the condenser or the coils.[/COLOR] If the above items check out OK you will have to remove the cover in the freezer so you can inspect the evaporator coils. If partially frosted over, it could be a sealed system problem. If heavily iced/frosted over it is a defrost problem. Also is the freezer/evaporator fan running when the compressor is running? thanks a lot for getting back to me. before I answer the help you gave a little update. The freezer is at 32deg F and the fridge is at 56degF and holding there. Over the last day the freezer has built up a lot of frost all along the back wall. Dont know if this helps at all. also when you turn the temp all the way to off in the fridge you can hear it turn on and off. Did you remove the rear panel and clean the condenser coils (Item 9 in Section 1). Also the condenser/compressor fan blades.
-yes removed and cleaned up everything Is the compressor running.? You can usually hear it but should also be able to feel it vibrating.

-yup the fan is running and you can feel the compressor vibrating If the above items check out OK you will have to remove the cover in the freezer so you can inspect the evaporator coils.

-gonna open it up now and inspect the evaporator coils and check if the fan is running when the compressor is. Like I said in the start of the post. It was not there when the problem started but today when I checked the freezer there was frost starting to build up along the evaporator cover that was visable with out taking anything off. I would have gotten back to you sooner but now the computer is on its way out also. I cant thank you enough for trying to help me fix this I am very mechanically inclined but never worked on a fridge pretty confident with your help and those diagrams I can get this fixed.
Ok so i forgot about the ice maker. I watched a video on how to remove it seems very easy. Only question is where would the water turn off be? guessing tied into the sink? thanks in advance

Probably, depends how it was installed.
Just follow the water supply line back to where it is connected to the house plumbing.
Often they are in the basement.

hey thank you all for the help. its been a while since i was on the forum for the help advice. Its actually my moms fridge and she got it working by turning off and fully defrosting everything.
however this was not a permanent fix... i just havent had a chance to get over to help.
the problem happened again and so i popped the back of the freezer off and it is most deff heavily iced over and frost everywhere.
what are the next steps I should take?
looking at the parts I see there could be an issue with the heater? or the defrost timer? or a bad thermostat? how do i check these things? I am good with a multi meter just not sure what and how to start checking this stuff
Thank you again for all the help and such quick replies I see the parts are all around 50$ and a repair tech is at least 80$ just to come so hoping i can fix it myself. she was looking at new fridges today but i cant see her spending 800 she doesnt have if i can fix it.

First remove the evaporator cover in the freezer so you can see the coils.
Do not let them de-ice.
Manually force a defrost cycle by turning the defrost timer cam (Item 12 in Section 3 of the parts) till the fans and compressor turn off.
There is usually a hole in the cover to let you do this without taking anything apart.
Now check the defrost heater to see if it is on.
Be careful you do not want to burn your fingers.
If the heater is on then the timer needs replacing, re: it is probably stalling during it's rotation so is never getting into a defrost cycle.
If not on.
Unplug the unit.
Remove the wires for the heating element (Item 9 in Section 4) from the wiring and measure it for continuity, usually around 20 ohms or so.
If the heater is OK
Remove one wire to the defrost thermostat (Item 12 in Section 4) and measure it, should be 0 ohms when frozen. Note that it opens just above freezing so must be frozen to check it. Also inspect it, if it is bulged at all replace it even if it measures OK.
If both the above are OK then odds are the defrost timer contacts are toast.
Best way to test this is a live test to see if you have 120 volts across the heater/defrost thermostat combo. |
