my family has a ge top load washer we purchased back in 2002 brand new. its been a perfect washer until last night. i was washing a load of clothes and everything was fine until it went to the spin cycle. when it got to the spin cycle i heard my washer making a clunck clunck clunck sound and then it stops spinning. i have no clue to what it is and i have 4 kids under the age of ten who dirty clothes alot. i need my washer fixed but as i said i have 4 kids and really can not afford to hire a repair man to come out to fix it. if anyone can help me i would be most grateful. thank you

To begin we need more information.
1. Please reply with the model number.
2. Has the machine shut down completely?
3. In the spin mode, is there a humming coming from the lower right corner of the machine? (this would be the pump)
4. Do you know how to take off the front panel?
5. Can you provide any other details, information or observations that may help in diagnosing your problem?
This may be inexpensive fix, but you should know that between the cost of the parts and the possibility that the diagnosis provided here may not be correct (because no one can see your machine in person) and the fact that your usage is so high your correct decision may be to purchase a new machine. Let's see what the new info tells us.

the model number is wwse5200b1ww. it has 5 speeds normal/fast, normal/slow, gentle fast, gentle slow, casuals pulsed. i use it on gentle/slow, but when i changed it to normal fast it worked for a little bit, then it started making the same sound, the click click click sound then it stops running at all. yes the pump still works i can hear it humming and it drains the water out. i took the front panel off and seen the motor and the belt is still there and looks brand new, i didnt figure the belt would have anything to do wit the clicking sounds i hear from the machine. im not sure if a timer is going out or a cylinoid. im not even sure if it has a cylinoid thing or not. i also noticed that it does agitate it just does not spin, and if it does spin it starts spinning and then starts making the clicking sound. i took the front panel off to see if anything was binding up and i did not see anything but i noticed the motor was getting hot, i figured it was from not being able to spin. in my opinion and i know nothing about these things but i would guess it is the transmission or clutch that is wrong with my washer. and i just found out after research that a washer has such things. but if anyone could give me any other ideas that would be great. thank you

Ok, thanks for the updated information.
You should go to the "Find Parts" tab on this site and put in your model number. You will get a set of panels on the left side with various component collections for your machine. Choose panel 3 (suspension, pump and drive components) and you will see an exploded view of the motor, clutch and other components.
Your problem sounds like the clutch, which is causing the motor to heat up as it trys to turn. On this machine the clutch is a part of the pulley on the motor. If you can, listen to the machine with the front panel off as it tries to run and see if you hear the clicking sound at the clutch. Also, see if you can turn the clutch by hand. Finally, search this site for clutch issues with top loading GE washers and from the discussions see you think the clutch is your issue.
If you decide to replace the clutch, order it from this site, item 608 on the parts view.
Good news: This is a relatively easy repair, You should follow instructions in posts you find on this site or others.
Bad News: This is rather an expensive part, and if it is not your problem, which it may not be, you will have spent a substantial sum and not repaired your machine. Unfortunately there is no real good way to test the part, but if you take it off before you order a replacement you may be able to determine if it is defective.
Sorry I cannot be more specific, but a long distance, no see the machine is a difficult diagnosis for the problems you describe. Read as many sites about the GE clutch as you can until you feel comfortable with a decision. If it is not the clutch, it could be the transmission, which is another big expense. I don't think it is economic to replace both the clutch/pulley and transmission, you can purchase a used machine for less or a new machine for a little bit more.
Good Luck and post a reply on what you decide to do and if you try to fix it, how it turns out.
