Maytag side-by-side leaks water that freezes at bottom of freezer

I read other posts, and I don't want to sound TOO stupid, but here I go! My control panel that runs the icemaker/water dispenser had smoke coming out of it a few years ago, my took it apart and removed the computer board because my husband was worried that we would burn down the house. Water started accumulating at the bottom and freezing, so he disconnected the water line to the fridge. The leaking is getting worse and is coming out of a "grate" like structure in the back towards the bottom of the freezer. Do I have a drain as I read in other posts? If so, where would all of that water go? I just cleaned it out about a month or two ago, and already everything at the bottom of the freezer is incased in ice-at least 3-4 inches high and sloping higher at back of freezer than the front. I was thinking i needed to replace the crappy Maytag brand, but now my 25 year old GE fridge in our laundry room is doing the same thing. Help?? I know I sound incredibly stupid, but believe it or not-I'm the fix-it person in our household!!!

Here are your parts Replacement parts for MSD2756AE models | AppliancePartsPros.comDo I have a drain as I read in other posts? If so, where would all of that water go? Yes you do. If you look at the housing (Item 14 in Section 4) which is under/behind the evaporator coils you will see it has a hole (center/bottom). The drain hose (Items 25 and 23 in Section 1) connect to it. It then drains the water from your auto defrost into the pan (Item 16 in Section 1)which is under the unit. I know I sound incredibly stupid, but believe it or not-I'm the fix-it person in our household!!! Does not sound stupid to me none of us knew bout the drain till someone else told us. Sounds like drain tube is plugged so that the water from the defrost cycle cannot drain into the drain pan. I would check that it is clear. If plugged a turkey baster with warm water, an air compressor with low pressure or a wire can often be used to clear it. Also check that it is not plugged with dust etc. at the drain pan end. You might as well clean the condenser/compressor fan and the condenser coils and the vents in the kick plate and rear cover while you are down there. If it looks like stuff is growing in the tube I would flush it with a 10% bleach solution. This should kill the stuff and let you flush it out. You may have to do this several times, let it sit for 15 minutes or so between flushes. Be careful that the drip tray does not overflow and empty the drip tray after you are done. If the drip tray comes out easily, some of them do not. Be sure to unplug the unit while doing this. |

Thanks for the message, I will be trying that fix this weekend-will update you later. Regarding the smoke that came out of my icemaker (when my husband saw the smoke, we took it apart and remove the circuit board) do you think that if I just purchased the new circuit board and installed it, that it would work again? We have been without an icemaker and disconnected the line about 5 or 6 years ago. The smoke didn't happen until about 2 years ago. I honestly don't know why it started on fire. Thanks!

FYI the board in the dispenser area does not control any aspect of the ice maker. It controls the fountain and and dispenser mechanisms. That being said those boards seem to fail for no reason some times. other times it's either the cube/crush solenoid (to the left of the auger bracket in the back of freezer) or the ice door solenoid can crap out and cause it. I've also seen the switch behind the rubber pad short out and cause issues. check the solenoids for free movement, they usually lock up/melt when they fail.
You can probably turn your ice maker on and still get ice, it just won't dispense it out the door.
And this is also not related to your ice in the bottom of the freezer issue. As denman said it's your drain line is plugged. I recommend clearing the drain line with hot water and compressed air. I would caution against sticking anything sharp in there, there is a rubber elbow right after the drain hole and it's easy to poke a hole in or push off of the drain fitting. Once you get it flowing a bleach solution can be used to kill the moldy gunk living in there.
Hope all this helps.
p.s. double check the housing where you removed that computer board. if it's melted/warped in any way be sure to replace it. Same goes with the dispenser door that is in there. good luck!
edit: If you got smoke out of the actual ice maker, then you probably had a heater short out or got water in the module. replacing the Ice maker should fix it.

Thanks soooo much for all of your help. I will be fixing my own appliances from now on (with your expert help, of course). What a great idea, cudos to whoever designed this sight! I will buy all of my parts from you, you guys are awesome!!! I did everything that you recommended and It worked, YEA! There was one very disturbing thing that I noticed while I was working on the inside of the freezer. One of the defrost heater tubes has been too close to the side of the plastic on the right side of freezer and has melted a large section of the unit. The burnt chunks of plastic had fallen off and were clogging the drain hole that then froze solid with ice. I know that I'm long out of warranty coverage, but is this something that poses a fire hazard of any kind? What is the best way to keep that line away from the plastic, in the diagrams I cannot find any part to attach that to the silver coils-should I just use a piece of metal wire and tie it off to the evaporator coils? I sure wish I could punish Maytag, somehow, for making such a P.O.S.!! Thanks again for all of your help! Cyndi

If you click on the heater's (Item 12 in Section 4) picture a new page wil open withe Q&A section. The third question down has info on this type of problem.
To repair the hole in the freezer line go to Home Depot etc. and get some duct tape. It is silver foil with a peel and stick backing (not the fiber type).
Also check that it has not melted the insulation behind the hole. |

Also check that it has not melted the insulation behind the hole. The insulation has been melted, mainly just wanted to be sure that this was not a fire hazard. Would the melting of insulation be causing me higher electricity bills?

Double check your warranty, some units have lifetime liner warranties. Can possibly call Maytag and ask them what, if anything can be done.
