The compressor is short cycling. Operates for a minute then shuts down.

You must have insulted this fridge because it seems that it is messing with you. First no defrost and now this. I am assuming this is a new symptom now that you have defrosted it. You never did say if "Is the compressor running normally or is it on all the time or switching on/off often or not on?" so I am assuming it ran continuously when it was frozen solid. At least it should have. Check how hot the compressor is. Check that the condenser/compressor fan is running. If the compressor is very hot, let it cool down and re-try. If not hot then you either have a compressor problem or a compressor start device problem. Here is a good site with info on how to check them. How To Fix a Refrigerator - Appliance Repair Guide - ACME HOW TO.comNote that a compressor may check out OK electrically but still be bad as it may have mechanical problems. |

I have cleaned the underside very well. Replaced the frig side temp controller. The problem was first found by frig side freezing over things. Then noticed ice cream was soft in freezer. Took off the panel in freezer and saw top of coils frozen only. Melted it and waited overnight and looked top two or three coils frozen. Put it into defrost mode and it worked and melted the ice.
Does the cover need to be on to keep the air flow more even across the tall coils? I left it off and the tops are frozen up. But not sure if a problem or due to the cover being off.
So, what to look at doing to see if a valve is bad or what. I didn't see evidence of Freon leak: no oil or mess when I cleaned the underside and looked around.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

tgroup Does the cover need to be on to keep the air flow more even across the tall coils? Just do your test again but this time put the cover back on. Does not sound good, my prediction is you will still have a sealed system problem. So, what to look at doing to see if a valve is bad or what. There are no valves in the sealed system. If the compressor runs the evaporator coils should get cold. Usually you do not see evidence of a freon leak. A sealed system problem will be anexpensive repair as you need a pro. |
