I have a Whirlpool ThinTwin washer/dryer combo. Some of the white enamel paint around the little round holes where the water drains from the tub has worn off, leaving small faint rust circles on white clothing and sheets at the end of the spin cycle. Has anybody tried, or would you recommend, lightly spraying a paint specifically for metal to recover the worn areas?

I personally have not done this but I would try the paint used to repair dishwasher racks.
Clean up the rust as best you can and perhaps rough up a small area the enamel around the hole so you get better adhesion.
