Over the course of about 2 weeks our 11 year old freezer-on-the-bottom Amana stopped working. First the freezer temps got warmer, to the point of everthing melting. Then the fridge got warm. We just replaced the relay and the problem has not been fixed. The compressor still hums when turned on.

If you already replaced the compressor start components and it did not fix the problem, then the compressor itself has gone bad.

We replaced the relay. The compressor still hums when unit is plugged in. What would cause the compressor to go bad anyway? This ref is only 11 yrs old.

The compressor consists of two major parts: electrical (motor) and mechanical (pump). Based on your description there is something wrong with the pump. If you believe this fridge is good and it's worth to fix it, then replace the compressor and, hopefully, it will last another 11 years.
