My aunt's dryer stopped working yesterday. When pushing the push to start button to turn it on the dryer will not stay on without holding the button down. She tried just using a heavy object to hold down the button, but soon realized that the timer was not advancing nor was the dryer heating up. My uncle said that the heating element had been replaced before, but hasn't given me a timeframe and I'm not sure if it should be replaced again. From what I've read in the forums it could be a few different things. With these symptoms, could someone please point me in the right direction with maybe what parts to test or an idea as to what the problem could be? Thank you very much for any assistance you can give me. It would be very nice to help them out with this since they may not be able to afford a new dryer (they just had to replace the washer) for a few months. :(

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for GEQ9858JQ models | AppliancePartsPros.com

See the attachment for the tech sheet

There are 2 relays (Item 23 in Section 3) of the parts.
One for the motor and the other for the heater.
I believe they are the same but double check this.
I would swap them.
If the unit now runs but does not heat you have a bad relay.

Hi, thank you for responding to my question. I tried swapping the relays but to no avail. The dryer still does not stay on or heat up.

Try different cycle types to see if any of them run OK.

If everything is no good then odds are that your control board is toast.

Tried different cycle types and still nothing. Seems like it is the control board. Thank you for your help though. My uncle doesn't want to spend over a $100 to repair this old dryer and not be sure it will work after that. He's gonna wait and save up for a new one meanwhile we take trips to the laundromat. Thank you again for your assistance.
