My kenmore washer 417.42042100 front load has abruptly stopped agitating or spinning. I have checked the door locks and checked that the pump is draining. The timer appears to be working and the washer fills and drains but will not turn. The motor does not appear to be engaging when the timer reaches the agitate or spin cylcles. Do I need a new speed controller?

I closed the door and clicked through the cycles on the dial. The washer filled and drained but didn't agitate or spin. When the timer came to the end it was once again possible to open the door. I also opened and closed the detergent drawer while in operation which would start and stop operation. Is there another/better way to check the door lock?

Yes. You have to measure the resistance across the wax motor (the orange piece on the right side at the following picture) terminals. The normal reading suppose to be about 1500 Ohms. If the reading is incorrect, replace it.
