The refrigerator does not seem to go on defrost. About every month and a half I have to take everything out of both frig and freezer take off the back panel of inside the freezer and manually defrost it with a hair dryer. In the summer when it's more humid it happens about every 2 to 3 weeks. I'm wondering if the defrost timer is worn out or if there is a electric defrost on the coils that needs to be replaced.

Here are your parts Model SearchI do not know how to force the control board into a defrost mode, perhaps someone else will jump in with it. GE is a pain to get tech info. It may not even be possible. So check the heater and the defrost thermostat for continuity with a meter. The thermostat should be 0 ohms when it is frozen. The heater probably a few 100 ohms. this unit has a glass type defrost heater, they are notorious for blowing, see item 230 in the Freezer section. You will note that they have updated it to a dual heater in an attempt to improve reliability. |
