Agitator not working, squealing noise

Recently after filling up with water the machine makes a squealing noise and agitator does not turn. After pushing tub several times, the agitator will then turn and noise stops. Everything works as normal from then on. I am guessing at the age of machine since it came with house. What could be the cause?

Hi,

The drive belt could be slipping and needs to be replaced.
