IF the compressor runs and shuts off a minute or two after starting, how do I tell if the overload is bad or if the compressor is overloading and going bad?
Is there a specific ohm reading across the compressor terminals that will tell me what my problem is?

Ohm readings are worthless for this type problem, only an amprobe will determine if compressor is drawing excessive current. If the compressor is vibrating, it is running and as the current rises to the klixon trip current, it will click open. An amprobe would confirm, you have a bad compressor.
