My gasket is torn on the bottom and needs replacement. Is this a do-it-yourself project for a novice or should I call a repairman?

Easy to do. The old gasket will just pull out of the door channel and the new one goes back in the same way. Just start at a top corner and work your way around. When done, the gasket may not seal depending on how it was packaged, so while holding the door closed, use a hair dryer to gently heat the gasket along the edges and it will start sealing as you move along. This may take a little time, but you want to ensure it is sealing tight when you are done.
