Found leak under 6 yr old Kenmore D/washer. Leaking thru rubber washer on heating element. Found element was also cracked. Tried to find replacement, but after 6 hrs of searching----it is obselete!! Replacement from Whirlpool (Model DUL300XLTS0 ident.. to K/More) is also obselete. The good folks at this site have found a replacement (part # 8194200), but also requires a change-out of an electronic control for higher wattage, etc, etc. How difficult will that be to perform--?? Just pull and plug in new one--?? Will I have to take the door fully apart or is access fairly easy--?? Is there anywhere I can get drawings/procedures on the control box removal-?? Any tests or special start-up procedures--?? The element replacement is a breeze.
Any help or pointers are greatly appreciated. Tim

If you have a stainless tub, then the part ( AP3841139) is the correct upgrade part. The original models came out with a lower wattage element that didn't provide proper water heating. The new element improves washing and drying, but also requires the electronic control to be changed which is easy enough to do. If you can change the element, you can change the control. Just remove the screws that hold the control console in place and the control is inside. Move the wires from the old one to the new one and put it back together. Simple as that.

Many thanks for the quick response. After screw removal on the control console on the Kenmore 665.16953000 do I pull straight forward or upwards to remove--?? Any tabs I need to click to remove it--?? Feels a little stubborn, but I've been gentle thus far.
Thanks & best regards, Tim

Pull the panel out, then up. If will be a bit stiff simply due to never being removed. There are no tabs for the panel itself, but under the panel will be a cover held in place by three tabs. The electronic board is under that cover.

Many thanks again for your expertise!! One other question I have is on the Retainer/Spring grip (AP # 3085307) on the element. In the parts diagram it shows just one (1) on the left side facing unit. I actually only took one off, but from the right side. Would make sense to have one on BOTH sides. The left side without one is where the leak was the worse albeit the rubber washer looked pretty bad after 6 years. The parts diagram is difficult to tell which way the retainer goes and I can't remember how came off. In the diagram looks like the protruded side goes into the tub----but doesn't look long enough to grab rubber washer on inside. I would assume it acts like a lock washer---so does the flat side go againgst the bottom of exterior tub--?? Should I get a new one for both sides--?? They are $4-5/ea for a 8 cent washer, but I believe in proper replacement parts. Using a standard lock washer (tines slightly elevated on both sides would not provide a true flush fit on the S/S tub exterior--??
Thanks and best regards, Tim

The retainer is behaving just like a lock washer and is there to prevent movement between the element nut and the tub itself. How it goes on I couldn't really tell you because the number of these things that I actually remember seeing I could count on one hand. The majority of the elements I have seen never had one and as long as the nut is tight enough to gently compress the rubber washer inside the tub, the seal should be good and the pressure from the washer should be enough to keep everything tight. So I guess it's up to you as to which way you want to go, but I wouldn't worry about it myself.
