Though I couldn't figure out the specific problem, my LER7646EQ0 Whirlpool Electric Dryer was taking far too long to dry clothes. I replaced the heating element and thermostat, thinking that should cover all the bases and give my dryer a few more years of life. Nonetheless, the problem remains.

The heating element is held in a long metal casing (part # 14 in the Bulkhead Parts diagram). This casing has a protruding "oval" segment near the upper end with air holes, presumably through which the heat is directed into the main area and to the wet clothes. While not directly attached, it is supposed to be held tightly against a similar sized opening in the upper back area of the dryer. However, the metal part that holds it "tightly" wasn't doing so and it the casing "hung loosely" instead.

Would affixing the casing with the heating element tightly to the opening be likely to solve my "not drying" problem? If so, is part #12 the one I need to hold the heating element casing (Part #14) tightly to the frame opening? Is there a safe (because of the high heat level) temporary alternative (because the part is temporarily out of stock) to hold the casing tightly?? Duct tape was a disaster and I don't know what metal wires or other parts might be "fire safe".

All thoughts appreciated.

Here are your parts
Model LER7646EQ0

Here is a wiring diagram

When you put the lid on, there should be two screws the hold the upper end of this assembly tight. They are under the lint filter door.
Also note there should be a gasket between the upper hole and the drum back. See Item 73 in Section 3.

Yes if it is loose at the top it could cause drying problem since it is not sucking the air through the drum but from around the opening.

If the heater is running OK then air flow is the problem.
The most common causes are:
1. Vent system: clean and check
2. Dirtly or loose blower wheel
3. Dirty lint filter. Especially if you use fabric softener. It can coat the lint screen. Clean with soap and water

There are others.

Vent Check
Undo the dryer from the exhaust
Run a load
If the load dries correctly then you have a vent problem.
Clean/check the vent system. Make sure the outside louvers open fully.

If you do not want lint in the house.
Take a pair of pantyhose, put one leg into the other and attach this to the dryer exhaust.
Leave enough room behind the dryer so it can blow out like a windsock.
Run a load.

Both the above will allow you to check the air flow and temp.
