So my front loader Frigidaire finally broke down after 6 years, spider was cracked and it is too expensive for me to replace, so I picked up an untested estate by whirlpool top loader for $40 at a thrift store. When I start the cycle it begins filling and then leaks from the water pump. The water pump is a cheap, easy fix so I don't mind replacing that, but I'm not sure if this thing will even spin. I tried turning the knob to various points and it will either fill or do nothing. Should it spin? or will it not spin until it reaches a certain water level? If the motor or coupling is bad I'm probably just going to take it back. How can I test the spin cycle without filling it up?

If you put the timer on spin it will spin without filling up. I would guess the coupling is broken, and it is a less expensive repair than the pump. Pull the pump and motor and check the coupling. If the machine will work with a pump and coupling repair you got a good deal, go with it.
