My washing machine is leaking water from the bottom of the transmission unit. I believe it is the gasket seal from the bottom of the basin allowing water to drip through the transmission and down into the bearing housing. It has been getting very noisy during the spin cycles but only recently(today) that the puddle appeared on the floor. Took off front panel and can see the water begin to drip from the bottom of the transmission unit as soon as it begins to fill. Obviously the issue has been present for a while, as there is quite a bit of rust on the motor mount, but has recently become a big issue. How daunting a task is replacing the basin gasket seal and should I go ahead and replace the transmission too? To be perfectly honest, we can't afford a new washer or expensive parts for that matter but with five in our family(two of which are in diapers) a washer gets well used daily, a very integral member of the household to say the least. Please help!

Besides the seal and the tub bearing (excessive noise ) replacement there could be a few more parts involved. It can be determined only after you'll disassemble the washer. There is a 50/50 chance for the transmission to be bad in such situation. You will need a special spanner wrench to disassemble the washer.
