The dip tube in my water heater disintegrated. I've since replaced the heater but the indications of problems with it were finding little pieces of the tube in the strainer at our kitchen sink faucet. If these pieces were making their way to the kitchen faucet, they were undoubtedly getting to the water valve on the dishwasher. Is there a strainer on the valve that would stop these pieces from getting into the valve? Is removing the valve for inspecting rather straightforward?

Yes on the input side.

Yes, under the washer remove the kick plate to get at it.
