I have a Kenmore 70 Series washer, model #100.82872100, which is about23 years old.

I have been having a problem with a rattling sound when agitating orspinning, and now the washer won’t work at all.

I had a rattling sound and a slight smell (don’t know particularlywhat the smell is) when the washer was agitating or spinning. I just replaced both the agitator dogs andthe motor coupler. The old parts reallydidn’t look that bad, but the parts were cheap so I took a shot at replacingthem. I’ve done a couple washes, and therattling sound persisted.

The washer is at the spin cycle right now. I stopped it to get the model number. When it restarted, there was a hum/buzz, andthen it started to spin. I happened tostop it again right after that, and now it won’t spin; it just did the hum/buzzand then a click and then nothing. Iturned the dial to put the washer at a different place in the cycle, like thewashing part, and all I get is the buzz – it won’t agitate or spin or anything.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I think the transmission is the likely problem, and given the age of the machine I think you should have a short celebration congratulating yourself on getting that many years from the model and then go out and by a new model.

You can replace this machine with almost the exact same technology, for about $300 to $350 in our area, and even lower if you shop around and search for sales.
