I have a top freezer GE Hotpoint model HTS18GBSBRCC that turns on about every half hour and runs for about 20 mins. The temp in both the frige and freezer is at an acceptable level when the fridge kicks back on, so I dont know why it comes on. Until about a month ago, it never did this. I actually never remember hearing the fridge before. I did suffer a brownout that kept the frige trying to kick back on, only to shut off due to the brownout, but that was in August. I tried replacing the defrost control (thinking that some sort of timer was not working properly anymore), but that didnt work. The coils are clean and there is plenty of room around the sides of the fridge. Any ideas? Again, there is no problem with the temp in the fridge or freezer at any time. I just dont want the condenser to break due to being used so frequently, compared to before.

How do you know that the temperatures are at an acceptable level?
It is hard to tell what the actual freezer temperature is because frozen is frozen though ice cream is a good indicator as to the temperature.
The freezer should be at 0 to 5 degrees F and the fresh food at approximately 40 degrees F.
The thermostat controls the freezer temperature.

It sounds like the unit is working OK and that the thermostat is turning the unit on when it warms up in the freezer.
I would check your door seals in case cold air is escaping causing the unit to run more often.
Check that they are clean.
Take a 2 inch wide strip of paper and put it between the seal and frame, then pull it out to see if there is a seal.
Work you way around he doors.
Also check the hinge side of the doors to make sure the seal is not grabbing and twisting when you close the door.
A light coating of white lithium grease or vaseline often fixes this problem.
Also check the door hinges.
