Roommate overloaded the washer and It wont spin, the motor runs and I can hear a "ticking" noise that sounds like a gear is unable to catch.

The ticking noise may be the motor running. Typically the problem is the coupling, which you can diagnose correctly if it will drain but not agitate or spin.

If it agitates but does not spin check the clutch and the brakes, here is the part with a video to show you how to get into the machine.
