Working on a mid 80's Kenmore 70 Series Heavy Duty Washer. Intermittent problem, the washer stops just after it fills for the rinse cycle. I have checked the lid switch <only shuts off spin function, all others work with the lid open>, the drain is clear, the motor runs fine. My initial diagnosis was the timer. I replaced it with a new unit from SearsParts.com. Problem returned about 10 loads later. This problem shows up about every 8th to 12th load. (Three of the four times it has happened I have been running a white load with hot water, may be a coincidence.) Most of the time the timer stops in the spot in the cycle, once it continued all the way to OFF. Watched the mechanism below last night but did not find an obvious culprit. Of course the problem would not present itself while I had the back off laying on the floor watching it. What next?

That's a old washer, would guess it's a bad connection giving you the intermittent problem.
