I had a flood under my washer today, I found it coming from the water pump. I took it off and found nothing visually wrong, other than the leak. The pulley spins freely, though it is seated loosely. The other problem I noticed is the tub doesn't want to spin during any of the cycles, at least not at speed, and there is a faint smell of rubber from the belt slipping. The drive motor seems to be running fine, so I'm lead to believe it is a bad tranny. Could this be the cause for the leaking pump?

The leaking pump has nothing to do with the transmission. Remove the front panel and the belt (check the belt), move the transmission pulley CCW and see if the inner tub will move.

You can find the complete instructions in the Service manual.

Here are the break down diagrams for the Maytag washer Model MAVT236AWW
