I had a series of problems with my stove that all started from the seal on the cooktop wearing out. This resulted in liquid dripping thru onto the control panel. I resealed it and replaced several parts and eventually thought all was back to normal.

Around a month later, my right front element failed (large). I thought it was a natural part of an aging stove and replaced it. When I replaced it, I discovered what appeared to be a piece of the sealant (silicon?) in the burner, between the coils and the glass.

The new element only works on high, i.e. it doesn't matter what I set the knob too, it gets very hot and stays that way. (Off turns if off fine, its the other settings that seem to have no effect). Did I hook up the wires wrong, should I find a wiring diagram and trace them out? I tried switching the wires around in case I had gotten confused when reattaching and did not seem to get the desired results, but I did not try all 16 possible combinations. In that process I may have forgotten which was the original (proper) way to be connected. Is the element defective? Is there some other part that is likely to also need replaced?

it sounds like you have it wired correctly. the switch is what tells the burner what to do. i would replace the switch. tom applianceeducator.com - parts
