how to remove metal collar sleeve on maytag transmission stem

I have a maytag washing machine model # lat 9416aae and I am replacing the mounting stem seal and tub bearing. I got everything off except for the metal collar sleeve that goes over the transmission stem. Is this supposed to slide right off or is it like screwed on with threads ? It will not move or turn at all. Any ideas as to what the problem is and how it can be removed. I would appreciate any help.:)

If you are replaceing the seal kit, first of all the threads are opposite. You turn it to the right to get it off. If the tub is removed, and you have to take the collar off, those threads are opposite too, and there is an alan wrench screw holding it in place. Take it out too, and then screw it off, and the seal is underneath it. When you go back with the new seal, put some dish washing liquid on the bottom of the seal, before you install it. These can be buggars to remove. Ideally, they slide off. Occasionally, they'll come off with the bearing. Try a little penetrating oil, or WD-40. Go under it with a chisel or an old screwdriver and knock it upward. Once you have it started, it gets easier. Be careful not to damage the tranny tube. When you have it off, plug the machine in, close the lid switch, and put it in spin. While it's spinning, take a piece of emery cloth and apply it to the spinning tube until you can easily place the new sleeve on.

I am trying to replace the seals at the bottom of the tub. After removing the agitator, the flat nut is firmly in place and doesn't budge.

One set of instructions says to remove the nut counter-clockwise.

Another says clockwise. I hammer away for a while one direction and then switch to the other. Net result is I'm not getting anywhere.

Thanks for any tips on what to do.

To remove the nut, you need to go clockwise, which is opposite of normal. Once you get that off, the mounting stem has to be taken off clockwise also, and don't forget to take the alan screw out. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Sorry to belabor the point, but I'm still not able to get the nut off.

This is a picture from Maytag Technical bulletin for models Searcy Platform Washers- ALW110RAW, ALW210RAW, ALW210RMC0,....NAV8800AWW
Series 15 for ALW models, and series 10 for SAV models.

While LAT2300aa, the parts and method seem the same and the directions to remove the nut are "counter clockwise."

No matter what the picture says it is opposite threads, and if you do not have the spanner wrench to take it off, it ain't coming off. Do you have the spanner wrench? I have only done a couple of hundred of these, and I know it is opposite threads, so soak it in grease, what ever you can, and beat the darn thing off. I know you can do it. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Vole,

If LAT2300AA is the correct model number of your washer then that's what written in the Service manual for this model: "Use spanner wrench to remove clamping nut. This is a left-hand thread so it must be turned Clock-Wise. A mallet will be required to loosen the nut."

OK. Soaked with WD40. Got the spanner wrench and went nuts hitting it clockwise and finally got it moving.

Three springs holding the outer tub in position were nasty to remove.

The outer tub was a pain getting off the shaft, but more WD40 and a hammer got it off.

There's a metal sleeve stuck inside the tub seal that I can't get out. It's the sleeve that goes around the transmission bearing?

I'm afraid to injure the sleeve.

Just keep banging away?

This repair job seems to require persistence in hammering.

Get the tub removed, and lay it on the floor, and hold the tub with both hands as you are sitting on the floor, while you are holding the open end of the tub toward you and kick it out with your foot. If you have some one there to hold the tub for you, do it. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
