The magnetron in my microwave has failed, I have done the usual continuity checks and only the magnetron is faulty. Also, the last time I tried to cook with it there was a very loud high speed drumming noise.

The magnetron part number is 2M167B-M62. The cost of this part, compared to other magnetrons of the same power handing, is very expensive, 2 - 3x the cost. I have found a cheaper alternative and at the same time discovered that there are two technologies; conventional and inverter. My microwave oven uses conventional technology that has a transformer to produce the high voltage (the alternative is an inverter).

This is the question:
Does it matter which technology the magnetron is connected to, can a magnetron tell the difference if the high voltage is generated by a transformer or an inverter?

Looking at different magnetron suppliers website they do not usually specify what technology their magnetron's use. Looking at the pictures there does not seem to be any physical difference, and reading the input/output specifications that too is the same.

What do you recommend?

2M167B-M62. There is a 2nd number on the label: J49-033183U1, also says 'Made in UK'

This microwave is for the UK market and that could be why it does not show on your listings. It is very reasuring to know that it does not matter how the high voltage is supplied to the magnetron, that has been a major stumbling block in obtaining a suitable magnetron. With this knowledge I will be able to make a selection.
