I have this older basic refrig/top freezer, no icemaker installed. This unit is in a vacation home, only gets used 3 months a year. The defroster fan whines horribly when cold. The blades aren't contacting anything so I figure the motor is bad? Will anything bad happen (other than frost buildup) if I just disconnect the motor and leave it that way?

Yes. It is there for a purpose. Replace it.

Ok, other threads here made it sound like replacing it had to include testing on motherboard. So now I have 2 more questions: (1) is just replacing going to be a waste of time if I'm not going to get into the motherboard stuff? and (2) is it safe to run with fan disconnected for awhile (days) while awaiting new part? Appreciate any help here.

The evaporator fan is important for the distribution of the cooled air, and aids in the evaporation process. Running the refrigerator without it will affect the efficient cooling of the food.The more food in the freezer and fresh food compartment, the less efficient the process. If you run it for a couple days, open the doors as seldom as possible; you can also expect a build-up of ice on the evaporator coil. If you can, keep the old fan in place while you await the replacement. The whining noise will assure you at least it is still turning.
