One of the large electric cook top elements runs extremely red hot even when only turned on to lowest setting. We are not sure which part to fix - any ideas? There are two elements in one metal "box" and the whole unit can be removed. Could the problem be within that unit or in the element switch button which turns it on and off? Any help is appreciated.

If the eye overheats in the new position then the problem is in the burner cartridge box. If it doesn't over heat in its new position, then the problem is in the rheostat control under under the control knob. If you decide to scrap the unit I am looking for the grease/flame filters on a 36 inch downdraft unit.
