my washer makes a loud screeching / grinding noise when the wash cycle starts, checked the belt, it was fine, when I move the belt back and forth it replicates the sound

I am thinking that the problem is with the brakes. They release so you would not hear the problem in the spin cycle.

If you decide to repair it you will need a special brake tool as the brake spring is under 200lbs of pressure and can be dangerous is not handled correctly.
