Hi, I have a Maytag Washer Model hav2460aww that makes a rapid clicking noise during agitation and gets a little softer during spin, but keeps clicking. It sounds like a gear slipping I think, but could be something else. I tested the fill, agitation, and spin, and the machine can run a full cycle (noisily). The washer at times has quit with a full load of clothes and water, so I change to the spin cycle and it drains, but it clicks.

I have smelled a slight burning occasionally but not always. The burning smell happens during when I first hear the clicking but the smell doesn't get worse. Having a full load of clothes makes the burning smell and washer halt.

I'm ready to pull the machine apart and solve this, but I need to know what to target and test/replace.

Hope to hear from someone. Thanks.

Jjeff,
The place to start is at the base of the machine. Slide the washer out away from the wall a few inches, Remove the front panel and raise and block the front of the washer up, so you can access and remove the belt. Check the belt for cracks, burn spots, also turn the drain pump pulley and "feel" for a ratchetting effect from the pump pulley.A ratchetting effect would indicate a problem in the pump. With a screwdriver slipped into the body of the motor, to hold the armature still attempt to turn the motor pulley in both directions, The pulley should not turn, unless the pulley splines are slipping on the motor shaft or the motor shaft is spinning in the armature. If all checks OK, replace the thrust bearing/pulley assembly and belt
