I wasn't able to see the model number, but the washer is a GE Profile Prodigy and is approx. 7 years old.

It is making the same sound as it would if it had a heavy off balance load, although the load is not off balance. It does it when the spin cycle begins, but before it begins the fast spin. All the lights in the house also flicker when it does this (there was no electrical interference before it started making the noise).

Any advice?

mine starting thumpin a while back, just thought i had a balance prob. now it sounds like a jet airliner taking off. can barely hear the tv over it.

my model is a hotpoint vbsr2060v1ww about 10 years old and used hard!

just thought i would buy another instead of worrying about it. i got my money worth, but if a cheap fix is poss, i aint avove keeping it. i still have the plastic over the knobs.

Probably you both have a bad motor, GE has had a lot of trouble with these very expensive motors. I think the new motors are ok, certainly expensive enough.
To be blunt, I would not pay for a new motor WH49X10035 about $328 plus shipping. Get a new Whilpool direct drive model.
