We're probably missing something from your description. Have you checked to see if the defrost heater is actually working? It's easy to check. Just remove the cover panel from inside the freezer section, and, when the unit is in the defrost mode, observe to see if the heater is coming on.

You may see it glow; you'll probably hear a sizzling sound (if it works) of ice melting.

Sure is a mystery - but everything has been working great for the past week. The only thing I can think is that it is sucking air some where and now that the
humidity is low the defroster can handle it.

Review: replaced the door gasket, unplugged the unit overnight and the drain pan filled with water so we know the drain tube is not plugged. One unusal thing has been happening the past few months, a loud snap/cracking sound ocassionally comes from the refirigator, doesn't happen to often, loud enough so we hear it from other rooms. The ice maker is an internal unit so there is no flap to stick open. It has to be something with the automatic defrost, but what ?

Rick- I believe the snap sound you're hearing is a bad compressor starting device. To see if it is bad, remove starting device from compressor and shake. If it rattles, it is likely bad. Your compressor is probably turning on every 4 minutes or so, running for a short while then tripping off because of the bad starting device. disassemble the starting device and see if the ceramic disk is in pieces. If so, you need a new starting device. Anywhere from $50 - $75. Good luck.

The unit has been working great since July. I think I wasted $96 on a new gasket. Fingers crossed --when spring comes and the humidity returns will my problem return. thanks for the help.
