Dryer stops and starts during entire drying cycle, is this normal?

Not sure of actual age of machine, it was here when I moved in. I am just renting and would prefer to not bother the landlord if possible.

Questions:

No matter what drying cycle I use or if I use a timed drying cycle the dryer stops and starts throughout the entire cycle. It takes forever for the clothes to get dry.

I also noted the venting hose is ripped and it is vented into the home's duct work instead of being vented outside. I will fix the ripped hose but does this venting into the duct work present a problem?

I would not worry about the stopping and starting, you have much larger problems.

You say the vent pipe is ripped so I assume that it is the plastic type of pipe.
This is not recommended because if you have a dryer lint fire it will burn and take the house with it. Also if the unit has been exhausting into the house ducting for any length of time the ducts will be full of lint.

Now if you have a lint fire it will spread through the ducts and you will have no time to get out of the house.

On top of this you are breathing in dryer lint which is not good for you. If anyone with asthma visits, it will likely trigger an attack.

If the unit is stopping and you have to wait to restart it, odds are high that the motor is overheating.

Thank you for your response! I double checked and found the vent pipe is a thin aluminum foil. I have passed along this information to my landlord to correct immediately.
