I've read over a lot of stuff and can't quite seem to pinpoint a problem that is the exact same as mine, and I'm lost.

The washing machine will fill, drain, spin, and do everything else exactly right except for agitate. When it goes into the agitate mode, it makes a horrible noise and doesn't agitate. I initially thought the problem was with the lower agitator base, and that the 'gears' for the splines to fit into were stripped....not the case. Still makes the same awful noise....appreciate any recommendations!

No movement on the shaft=transmission problem points toward transmission problem....I'll check it out...

Let me ask this potentiall silly question. Would there be any harm in simply letting the tub fill on the mini cycle rather than reversing any leads?

Well....

Checked it out...behaved quite erratically. Went fast, stopped, went slow, stopped....completely messed up. Thinking I'm going to just go get a new one since my thought is that the repair or replacement of a transmission is probably not a cheap one....
