We have a 2002 Maytag Performa PAV3300AWW Washing Machine

Washing a comforter that's been washed in this machine before (ie. it's not caused any problems previously), it stopped operating at the top of the cold rinse, after the hot wash. I pushed the knob in and pulled it out, but that did nothing. I left it awhile (15 to 30 minutes-ish), tried again, and it worked. But the timer now made a new clicking/ticking noise it previously hadn't. Then, when the rinse cycle was done, it stopped working at the top of the spin cycle. This time after I pushed the knob in and pulled it out, it began to work again - no wait necessary.

The only other info I can give is that there seemed a faint odor in the air of something burnt; not major, but the unmistakeable smell of something cooked. Having opened up the back of the control panel, I could see nothing obviously wrong, nor could I tell -by smelling- what the source was.

I understand the timer is often misdiagnosed as the cause of problems: is there any way to meter this to know? Perhaps the overload or imbalance protector has a problem? Of course, it appears to be an intermittent issue so there may be no way to be certain.... Sadly, there was no wiring diagram/schematic in/with the machine, although I believe I may have found it online.

I've metered the lid switch, the speed switch and the motor switch. All are good (now).

Thanks in advance for any help or leads!
