My freezer gave me a temp warning and compressor was not running. When it tried to run, it would make fast metal clanging noise for ~ 10, 15 second then quit after a louder click (sounds like relay open). It would retry in ~ 3 minutes and the same thing happen again. I replaced the starter-PTS (216008900) and capacitor (5304464438) and it still does the same thing. I did not replace the overload part (216110400) because it will take a few more days for delivery. I checked the C, S, R pins on the compressor for open or short to ground and they seems OK.

I would appreciate any advice to help me decide if this is a compressor failure so I will buy a new freezer or should I order the "overload" part which will cost $40 more than the $65 I spent for the starter-PTC and capacitor.

Seems like one of your compressor spings has broken=new compressor time if the item is worth fixing.

Thanks for the info. When the compressor tryied to run, it definitly not a smooth humming sound, instead it sounded like fast chattering. Few days before it quit, I heard the noise for a couple of seconds when it started and was able to get to run. what's inside of the compressor? how many springs and what does it fo?

Do you know about how much will a new compressor cost me?

Thanks again! and happy holiday

Either a compressor locked up or a busted spring= new compressor. Typical cost between $400 and $600. You can buy a new freezer for that easily.

Thanks! richappy. Do you know any brand that make reliable upright mid size freezer? I had a 28 year old whirlpool refrig and is still going but I am not sure if whirlpool still has good reputation now.

Post a new thread on this. I think that Frigidaire has solved their compressor reliability problems, but you need to verify this. Get a unit that has the condenser up and down the back of the unit, cheaper and more reliable.
